History

Francisco Moniz, O Velho, was one of these first settlers, who had uncultivated lands in this area and was responsible for establishing a farm and chapel. Francisco Moniz was a nobleman from the Algarve, who married Filipa da CÒmara (daughter of Garcia Rodrigues da CÒmara). He was one of the sons of João Gonçalves Zarco, the discoverer of Porto Santo (1418) with Tristão Vaz Teixeira and later the island of Madeira with Bartolomeu Perestrelo (1419)

The current parish church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, patron saint of the parish, would have been built between 1660 and 1668. Around 1722 the church had a vicar and a curate (created on December 28, 1676), who ministered the sacraments to 1114 souls.

The Porto Moniz Parish Church is dedicated to Our Lady of Conception, the patron saint of the Porto Moniz Parish to which it belongs.
This church, located next to the Town Hall building, began construction in 1660 and was completed eight years later.
It has simple architecture, highlighting its gilded main altar and the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament with its works of art. Also highlighted are various silk vestments, lamps, candlesticks, and other silver pieces.
